I am trying to connect to an old 'shared' HP Deskjet 612C printer through a Windows XP computer. I had very little problem connecting to the printer from laptop running Windows 10. However, I have another laptop running Windows 8.1 (not ready to upgrade yet) and when I try to Add Printer it tells me it can't find a driver for the Deskjet 612C and to pick a location to find the driver or exit and contact the manufacturer. I can't find the driver on the laptop and when I go to HP to find a driver, to download, it won't let me download one because it says that the driver is 'built in'. So basically my laptop can't find the 'built in' driver and there is no driver for me to download from HP. Any help in figuring out how to get a driver for my Windows 8.1 laptop, or how I can get the 'built in' driver be found in the Add Printer wizard would be appreciated. Hi, I just checked the HP website and found that they have discontinued the printer and all it said was that supplies like ink were available. I don't know if it can be done if you don't have the HP deskjet printer CD installed on the computer you want to use it on. If its 8.1, I don't think that it would be compatible as they are so different with the operating systems. If you used it with an XP computer, then I know its not compatible. The entire OS are too different. I did see some very good prices for brand new printers and they were around $50.00 USD and that was for printer, scanner, fax, and that sort of thing. This is being typed at 10:38 PM DST where I am. For a print only printer that has colour printing, it costs around $30.00 USD. Those should be I hope okay with the 8.1. You can also try on the web to see if anyone is selling locally to where you live and you could check around for shops that may have a good model 2nd hand printer to work with what you want. But as for drivers, that will be tougher as the printer division has been having troubles with corporate other stuff for too many years and I had a friend that left working for the HP printer section and HP completely because of the working environment. He was with them for over 30 years and it was all over really foolish b.s. That the managers were doing. There were more who left and I still have an HP officejet that is also not compatible with the system I am using and I really wanted to keep using it but HP wasn't updating the drivers. Its also not compatible with what I have now but was with my old (wonderful) XP. All I can do is say just get a new good printer. Check Consumer Reports magazine in the USA or Canada or other websites and magazines. From the post you posted if you have the disc you could try but I really think that its not going to work as they are so out of date and not supported by HP or Microsoft either way. HP still makes decent printers but certainly look around for something that will work with the 8.1. Yes, HP is still having more tech issues and should have fixed that definite bug of theirs with the 'built in' driver thing. Good luck and I hope you are able to get more help from tech people who wander through these message boards. No, I don't work for either company MS or HP. Even the printer I have now isn't as good print quality-wise as my old HP was. At least now I can scan pages in to the computer easier. For me it was trial and error with doing it with the 8.1 that I upgraded from. Keep that 8.1 as it is. I really hope you are able to find a good or great solution asap.:). I need a 'updated' Driver for the HP Deskjet 612C printer that is supposed to be Built into Windows 8.1. As I stated before, the Printer is attached to a Windows XP desktop. The XP desktop is 'Sharing' the Printer out to other computers. I have had no problem accessing the printer from a Windows 10 laptop and printing to it with the Built-in driver provided through Windows 10.
